Job Summary:
Hale Kipa is implementing the nationally-recognized Youth Advocate Program focused on providing individualized, wraparound prevention and intervention services to youth and their families on the islands of Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai. The program focuses on strengthening families and preventing further criminal/status offenses and/or abusive situations.

Program is looking for:

Youth Advocates (Statewide): Must have a strong ability to engage youth and families, knowledge of community, and be creative. Primarily fee for service.

I.                   JOB SUMMARY:

Provide a comprehensive, client-centered, goal oriented process for assessing the need of a young person for particular services, assisting him/her to obtain and complete those services and, at a systems level, to coordinate the provision of services with community resources potentially available to the young person in the community.

 

II.                ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1.      Achieve program and client outcomes established in planning and as measured by random and scheduled evaluation of data and other available measures.

2.      Foster maximum self-determination on the part of clients.

3.      Represent Hale Kipa and clients served in networking and collaborating with all pertinent case contacts, social institutions, organizations, and community resources that provide services for youth and their families.

4.      Ability to support the agency’s mission and follow personnel policies and procedures.

5.      Complete required paperwork in a timely, professional manner.

SPECIALIZED ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

6.      Engage with and develop connections with youth.

7.      Conduct pre-screening and orientation with the client to the counseling process.

8.      Implement service plans that are developmentally appropriate.

9.      Participate within a team context so that implementation of services is coordinated.

10.  Ensure ongoing communication and inclusion of all parties providing various services and/or those impacting upon service outcomes, facilitating the implementation of one overall service strategy for the client.

11.  Intervene with client as determined by the service plan.

12.  Monitor and evaluate services and treatment.

13.  Provide crisis management.

14.  Provide a planned discharge process.

15.  Provide aftercare services as defined in the discharge plan.

16.  Maintain current certification for CPR, First Aid and Physical Restraint.

 

III.             OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

1.      Other duties as assigned.

 

IV.              WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work Hours: Varies; set own schedule to align with need for availability.

Equipment Use:

1.      Access to an automobile, possession of a valid driver’s license, safe and responsible driving record and current no-fault auto insurance with at least the minimum state coverage requirements.

2.      Basic office equipment, including computer.

Environment:

Cramped office quarters, high level of noise and activity, dust.  Most often will meet with the client in their environment.

 

V.       PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Frequent driving, physical restraint and management of clients, demanding schedule, long periods of walking.

 

VI.              MENTAL DEMANDS:

1.      Independent thinking, quick decision-making, use of sound judgment, and immediate problem solving.

2.        Competing demands and priorities.

3.      High level of crisis and affect (anger, self-injurious behavior, depression, etc.)

VII.           COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:

1.      Communicate clearly, effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing.

2.      Ability to stay current with multiple written reports and documentation requirements.

3.      Ability to establish a therapeutic alliance with at times hostile and resistant clients.

 

VIII.        QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Training: 

1.      Preferred Bachelors Degree in Social Work, Psychology or related field, or relevant experience.

2.      An individual willing to accept supervision with a strong interest in the treatment and well being of children, adolescents and their families.

3.      An individual with a desire to learn and be challenged in their own personal and professional growth.

4.      An individual willing to function as an integral member of a team.

Skills/Knowledge:

1.      Ability to communicate and work effectively with people of diverse social, cultural, economic, age, gender and racial backgrounds.

2.      Ability to respect the individuality and confidentiality of persons served and to work in partnership with them and their families towards mutually established goals.

3.      Ability to work in partnership with client family members, and other team members, both in the program and the agency.

7.      Ability to effectively demonstrate problem-definition and problem-solving skills.

8.      Ability to demonstrate buy-in and advocacy skills; building ownership or support for change among affected individuals and teams.

9.      Knowledge of how to deal with ambiguity and how to handle stress resulting from change and from multiple meanings or possibilities.

10.  Ability to see the bigger picture, looking beyond details to see over-arching goals and results.

Specialized Skills/Knowledge:

1.      Ability to work with resistant clients.

2.      Ability to effectively function within street culture.

4.      A beginning working knowledge of symptoms and dynamics of sexual, physical, emotional abuse, neglect, substance abuse, domestic violence and other psychosocial problems.

5.      Ability to contribute to the development of culturally competent service delivery.

6.      A beginning working knowledge and understanding of child and adolescent development.

7.      A beginning working knowledge and understanding of family dynamics.

8.      Knowledge and understanding of crisis intervention techniques.

 

Prior Experience:

1.      Preferably some  work experience with adolescents and/or families, or equivalent life experience.
