Part Time Relief Youth Counselors
Job Classification: Youth Counselor Job Title: Youth Counselor Program(s): Reports To: Case/ Site Manager Supervises: Residential Milieu Budget: Persons Served: Out of home placements. Type of Position: Non-exempt
Job Summary: To participate with a team approach in providing a safe, therapeutic, supportive and affirming environment that facilitates the actualization of service plan goals for clients who have entrusted us with their vulnerability and need.
Job Functions:
1. Support the agencys mission and follow personnel policies and procedures.
2. Provide supervision to clients in all aspects of daily routine: A. Report to work as scheduled and remain until relieved. B. Treat clients with respect and dignity at all times. C. Identify and label inappropriate behavior for clients. D. Demonstrate knowledge of client treatment and service plans. E. Provide feedback to clients regarding progress toward treatment and service plan goals and objectives. F. Complete shift responsibilities as assigned. G. Maintain behavioral standards in accordance with program and agency policy. H. Remain available to clients throughout shift. I. Maintain clients in line of vision at all times.
3. Implement and maintain therapeutic programming and routines within the milieu: A. Review and remain knowledgeable about current client programming and routines. B. Identify gaps in programming. C. Provide input into decisions regarding program changes. D. Participate in the development of programming for clients. E. Implement programming as scheduled to ensure predictability and familiarity for clients. F. Modify programming to insure therapeutic benefits are maximized, only after consultation with the Site Manager. G. Implement all required nutritional standards. H. Insure clients receive all prescribed medication, as prescribed. I. Facilitate clients timely arrival at their respective day programs.
4. Effectively intervene in crisis situations and maintain behavioral standards: A. Identify potential and actual crisis. B. Assist in the management of crisis situations in accordance with plans developed with your shift team. C. Manage and direct crisis situations consistent with agency and program protocols. D. Ensure crisis situations are resolved and processed in accordance with recovery work protocols outlined by the agency and the program. E. Use Hale Kipas on-call staff to refer mental health emergencies and/or to access additional support and coaching. F. Document crisis situations within specified timeframes, including Critical Incident Report, client logs, staff communication log and other required program communication mechanisms. G. Report crisis situations to your Site Manager within specified timeframes.
5. Ensure the safety, security and cleanliness of the program facility: A. Develop pride and ownership in the provision of a quality program experience for youth who have no choice but to cope with an out of home placement. B. Participate with residents in maintaining a clean and safe program home. C. Maintain staff areas in a clean and organized manner, with utmost attention to confidential documents and information. D. Verify that all fire exits and routes are at all times clear and accessible. E. Implement fire drills as scheduled per program policy and record required data. F. Report physical plant problems to the Site Manager. G. Keep program keys on your person at all times. H. Make operational universal precautions at all times, without exception.
6. Implement and maintain milieu policies in accordance with agency and program requirements: A. Review and remain knowledgeable about agency and program policies and principles. B. Review, remain knowledgeable about and implement current milieu policies, procedures, standards, and team strategies. C. Report conflicts, concerns and/or inconsistencies regarding implementation of policies and procedures to your site Manager. D. Become knowledgeable about regulatory, licensing and funding source requirements. E. Become knowledgeable about and explore current best practices and innovations in residential treatment and milieu management.
7. Complete all required documentation and paperwork in a timely and professional manner: A. Complete assigned shift notes and communication log (change of shift log) per protocol to assure a seamless and proactive transition, as the new team reports for the next shift. B. Complete Critical Incident Reports prior to the end of your shift. C. Document all activity relating to the administration of medication.
8. Participate in all required meetings, training, and case conferences: A. Participate in all scheduled supervision meetings. B. Take an active role in defining your learning objectives and working toward your own professional development. C. Attend and participate in all agency, program and team meetings, as scheduled. D. Complete required number of training hours annually. E. Maintain current certifications to administer First Aid, CPR and Physical Restraint.
Specialized Functions:
Overnight counselors conduct bed checks every twenty (20) minutes. Overnight counselors document bed checks as per agency protocol.
Other Functions:
Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
Work Hours: Up to but not to exceed forty (40) hours (unless authorized by a supervisor). Shift schedule in milieu.
Equipment Use:
1. Access to an automobile, possession of a valid drivers license, safe and responsible driving record and current no-fault auto insurance with at least the minimum state coverage requirements.
2. Kitchen utilities and possible food preparation. Environment: Milieu environment; high level of noise and activity, dust.
Physical Demands:
Physical restraint and management of clients; high level of concentration; recreational activities; stamina; ability to lift up to approximately 25 pounds.
Mental Demands:
1. Independent thinking, quick decision-making, use of sound judgment, and immediate problem solving.
2. Competing demands and priorities.
3. High level of crisis and affect (anger, self-injurious behavior, depression, etc.)
4. Competing needs for attention and intervention from multiple clients at the same time.
Communication Demands:
Communicate clearly, effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
Qualifications:
Education/Training: Bachelors Degree in Social Work, Psychology or related field, or equivalent experience.
Skills/Knowledge: 1. Ability to communicate and work effectively with people of diverse social, cultural, economic, age, gender, sexual orientation and racial identities.
2. Ability to respect the individuality and confidentiality of persons served and to work in partnership with them and their families towards mutually established goals.
3. Ability to work in partnership with client family members, and other team members, both in the program and the agency.

2. A beginning working knowledge of symptoms and dynamics of sexual, physical, emotional abuse, neglect, substance abuse, domestic violence and other psychosocial problems.
3. Ability to contribute to the development of culturally competent service delivery.
4. A beginning working knowledge and understanding of child and adolescent development.
5. A beginning working knowledge and understanding of family dynamics.
6. Knowledge and understanding of crisis intervention techniques.

Prior Experience: Minimum of two years work experience with adolescents and/or families or equivalent life experience.
