Making new friends and reconnecting with those from past Ed Voc programs, Hale Kipa youth experienced another memorable Ed Voc series this winter. From December 23rd through January 3rd (with the exception of the holidays), 10 Hale Kipa youth from various areas of the island participated in the Winter Ed Voc series on Oahu. Youth had the option to attend all five days of programming or a single activity of their preference. No matter the time commitment, all youth took away invaluable experiences, life skills and connections that encouraged self-discovery and positive personal growth. Emphasizing experiential learning, Winter Ed Voc continued to inspire youth to make the world (or for starters Hawaii) their classroom.
Winter Ed Voc focused on fun, social, educational activities that allowed youth to express themselves individually and as a group. Inspiring creativity and nurturing relationships, youth crafted holiday gifts for friends and family. At Sherwoods Beach, they partook in a beach clean-up, which concluded with a “Sandman Contest” that made artistic use of the trash collected (see photo). Stimulating curiosity in nature, Hale Kip staff provided youth binoculars to watch birds and magnifying glasses to observe close-up smaller critters. Youth gave back to the community, making treats and toys for the dogs at Friends for Life animal shelter. While cooking healthy, delicious snacks, they even brushed-up on their mathematics. These are just a few examples of Winter Ed Voc’s wide array of activities.
Engaging youth socially, emotionally, and intellectually, these hands-on activities made learning fun and meaningful for youth. Ed Voc staff looks forward to educating youth through future Ed Voc crafted experiences that are aimed to positively impact youths’ lives.
