National Runaway Prevention Month is the annual awareness and prevention campaign for runaway and homeless youth. During NRPM, Hale Kipa aims to raise awareness of the issues facing runaway youth and highlight the services provided to them through the Youth Outreach (YO!) program. YO! provides street outreach, drop-in services, case management and health and medical services to Hawaii’s youth. Hale Kipa and Waikiki Health have been providing services to Hawaii’s homeless, runaway and street-identified youth and young adults on Oahu since 1989.
Hale Kipa has partnered with the City & County of Honolulu to recognize NRPM’s Green Light Project by lighting Honolulu Hale with green lights from November 5-12. The Mayor’s Office will also issue a proclamation in support of NRPM at a ceremony with Hale Kipa and Waikiki Health staff on November 7th.
NRPM has been recognized since 2002. The goals are to raise awareness of the runaway and homeless youth crisis and to educate the public about solutions and the role they can play in ending youth homelessness.
You can also help “Shine a Light”:
The theme of NRPM 2018 is “Shine a Light.” You can add a frame to your Facebook profile picture during November to help you show your support for runaway and homeless youth. Go to https://www.facebook.com/profilepicframes and type “National Runaway Prevention Month in the search bar. Choose a Shine a Light frame and select the end of November to “switch back to previous profile picture” and click “use as Profile Picture”
We also encourage you to join in “Wear Green Day” on Wednesday, November 6th and share a photo with the hashtag #NRPM2018. The National Runaway Safeline offers a 24/7 1-800-RUNAWAY hotline and online services at 1800runaway.org.
