Salary: $150,000 – $175,000

Job Summary:

The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the mission and operations of Hale Kipa, in partnership with the Board of Directors. Hale Kipa is a multi-service, fully accredited 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that specializes in working with at-risk youth and their families who often have nowhere else to turn. Hale Kipa has served more than 60,000 youth throughout Hawai‘i since its beginning in 1970 as a single shelter on O‘ahu. This includes working in partnership with public agencies and private organizations to provide residential, outreach, and foster care services. With programs that are flexible and responsive to changing needs, Hale Kipa supports youth involved in juvenile justice, behavioral health, education and child welfare.

Essential Duties:

- Oversee the organization’s programs and services across all islands, ensuring that Hale Kipa retains its deep and unwavering commitment to Hawaii’s youth, young adults, and families.
- Manage a high-functioning leadership team with clearly defined responsibilities and accountability, maximizing the strengths and talents of each team member.
- Provide an internal leadership presence in the organization that all staff can look to and rely upon.
- Ensure the organization has the financial resources by maintaining strong relationships with private and government funders and spearheading new fundraising opportunities.
- Seek out sources of funding that align with the organization’s mission, spark new opportunities, support gaps in funding, and oversee grant and contract applications.
- Oversee financial management of the organization through budgeting, bookkeeping and accounting, and financial reporting that meets nonprofit compliance requirements and provides data to inform decisions.
- Serve as the external “face” of Hale Kipa and represent the organization at community events at the local, state, and national level; develop opportunities to speak on behalf of the organization and share the mission with a broader audience.
- Identify opportunities to collaborate with community partners and leverage shared resources to expand or improve services.
- Maintain a working partnership, open communications, and a collaborative relationship with the Board of Directors. This includes attending Board of Directors meetings, sharing program accomplishments, presenting financial reports, leading organizational strategy discussions, and assist in recruiting Board members.
- Ensure the organization conducts long-term strategic planning and follows shorter-term implementation plans to achieve its goals and continually strive for greater impact.

Knowledge and Characteristics:

- A passion for and commitment to youth and families. Prior experience with the human services sector, with a background in youth services, is preferred.
- A team approach, with the ability to inspire, lead, and develop people.
- Demonstrated professionalism and presence, with an ability to engage with variety of people – staff, volunteers, clients, funders, government agencies, and the general public.
- Ability to oversee financial systems and understand and interpret financial information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, internally as well as externally to grow Hale Kipa’s community presence.
- Knowledge of nonprofit organizations and a willingness to engage in Hawaii’s nonprofit sector and also with national nonprofit trends. Ability to work with boards and oversee strategic planning, fund development, grants management, and audit and compliance requirements.
- Effective decision making that balances a rational, data-informed approach with an intuitive, empathetic, systems approach.
- Listening and learning abilities that value both the existing depth of knowledge within Hale Kipa and its community relationships, as well as new models and ways of thinking.
- Strong desire and capacity to learn and embrace Hawaii’s culture and values.
- Shares the values of Hale Kipa and its mission.

Education and Experience:

- A Bachelor’s degree is required. A Masters degree is preferred. Commensurate experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Must have a minimum of 5 years of nonprofit or related management experience.
