Become a Resource Caregiver

Becoming a Resource Caregiver is a powerful way to provide a safe, supportive home for youth in Hawaʻi who need it most. At Hale Kipa, our Transitional Family Homes program offers more than just placement; it offers purpose, connection, and transformation.

Change a Life, Transform Your Own

Transitional Family care can be both challenging and incredibly rewarding, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way. From training to continued support, Hale Kipa ensures you’re never alone on this journey.

If you’re driven by compassion and want to make a lasting impact in a young person’s life, our Transitional Family Homes program needs people like you.

You don’t have to be perfect to be a Resource Caregiver.

At Hale Kipa’s Transitional Family Homes program, we’re seeking individuals and families with a compassionate heart and a willingness to grow with youth in need.

Whether you’re single, married, with children or without, what matters most is your ability to provide a safe and supportive home. At Hale Kipa, we offer comprehensive training and ongoing support, so you’re never alone on this journey. Being a caregiver isn’t about perfection—it’s about commitment, care, and changing lives.

Real Stories, Real Impact

“When I help them have a better future in life, that’s my reward.”

Butch and Remy have participated in Hale Kipa’s Transitional Family Homes Program for over 10 years, caring for over 60 total youth from their home on O‘ahu.

“She [my resource caregiver] helps me through hard times by cheering me up, being there for me, and always loving me till the very end.”

FAQs

Foster parents can be single or married, with or without children, and may rent or own their homes. What matters most is your ability to advocate for and nurture youth. All Transitional Family Homes Resource Caregivers must meet standard qualifications, complete training, and undergo screening and certification.

We offer several options based on your availability and the needs of the youth:

  • Full-time Transitional Family Home: Up to 9 months
  • Short-term Transitional Family Home: One night to two weeks
  • Kamala Homes: Short-term emergency care

Youth in the Transitional Families Home program are between the ages of 3 and 17.

All Resource Caregivers receive:

  • 36 hours of initial training (including CPR, first aid, Hale Kipa policies, and program overview)
  • Ongoing training and 24-hour support
  • Training based on the nationally recognized Pressley Ridge Treatment Foster Care (TFC) model, which includes skills like communication, discipline, behavioral strategies, and relationship building

Training is scheduled around your availability, and most parents are certified in under three months.

Resource Caregiver families receive:

  • 24/7 on-call support from Hale Kipa staff
  • Monthly individual and group support
  • A dedicated staff member for guidance
  • Therapeutic and support services for youth
  • Respite care options for up to two weeks
  • A generous, tax-free monthly stipend to cover expenses
  • Medical and dental insurance for all foster youth

Hale Kipa carefully matches each youth with a Resource Caregiver family. Before any placement, youth and potential Resource Caregiver parents meet to ensure the home is a good fit.

This program supports youth with emotional and behavioral needs in a family setting until they can:

  • Reunite with their family
  • Be adopted
  • Transition to independent living

Resource Caregivers make a lasting difference by offering stability, safety, and support.

Youth in care are not “bad” children—they are healing from difficult experiences and need nurturing environments to grow and thrive.
